Saint Anthony
Hand carved statue of Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the most popular saints in the world. Eleven months after his death, he was raised to the honors of the altars in the fastest canonization process in history. As a young priest, Anthony of Padua entered the Franciscan order. Many legends surround his extraordinary skills as a preacher under Francis of Assisi. His sermon to the fish in the sea, who listened to him when the people didn’t want to, is particularly well known. Statues of Saint Anthony usually show him with the baby Jesus or the lily as a sign of purity. Saint Anthony is commemorated on June 13th. In many countries he is invoked to help find lost things. He is patron of Padua, Lisbon, Paderborn, Hildesheim; of the poor and social workers, of lovers and marriage, of women and children, of bakers, miners, travelers, swineherds, of horses and donkeys.
