Hand carved from linden wood in 60 inch. Oil-painting on gold leaf (14 ct.)
The original is a flat Byzantine style painting by Coppo di Marcovaldo (1225 – 1276). Today , it is located at the “Musei Civici” in the Palazzo Comunale in San Gimignano, Italy.
The following scenes are depicted in the individual oil paintings:
Crossbar left: Jesus entrusts Mary and John to each other. “Woman, behold thy son”, “Son, behold thy mother”
Behind Corpus (top left to bottom right): Betrayal of Christ (Kiss of Judas in Gethsemane), Sanhedrin trial of Jesus, Flagellation of Jesus (scourging at the column/ pillar), Mocking of Jesus, Crucifixion of Christ, Lamentation of Christ after the removal of his body from the cross.
Crossbar right: Jesus meets the crying women of Jerusalem.
Above below Jesus Pantokrator: Assumption of Mary.
